Post by MarkC »

Hi all,
Thinking about getting one of those Motow type bike carriers.
Interested to hear thoughts on them, experiences, advice please.
TIA.

They are good! Quick and easy to load and unload.

Do you have to add a light bar and /or number plate to these?

Yes you do need lights and number plate, for a number plate I just use a print out on paper and laminate it.

Careful with the home made number plates.
Cops will treat it as non compliant.
Vic roads issued number plate order online. Delivered 10 days.
Cost $37.50.

I've been using motow for 6 years and i'd just suggest a couple of things that helped me. Firstly, I cut the draw bar down as short as possible so the tabs hit the hitch when inserting it. Decreases leverage on the cars suspension and handling. Also I went up a spring rate in the rear of the car so it rides normally. The other thing is you dont tie the bike forward like on a trailer, try to tie down from the centre of the bike to the bar and compress the wheels into the wells with the suspension loading, it'll never move that way and you dont need a wheel brace/fork saver.

The main thing to watch is the alloy welds, they can crack potentially.

This applies to motorcycle racks as well. Hence, why I'm still using a trailer due to the simple rule that my bike would overhang greater than 150mm on either side of the body of the vehicle. The 150mm overhang does not start from the outer mirrors. It's the body of the vehicle!

Apparently on most vehicles MoTows are illegal from both a length and width perspective. My car is a Landcruiser and this ‘gift’ from the Mansfield police cost me $462 in 2022……Image

Even with my draw bar cut as short as possible, I'd still have to remove the handlebars to be within legal specs.

But having said that there's only a few area's in vic where they will book you for it, primarily mansfield lol.
